Re: Daughter held Captive 24 years

It's the one question the entire world is asking: how could a man keep his daughter and the seven children he allegedly fathered by her captive for so many years without anyone knowing about it?

There are few answers to that query, as the investigation into an unbelievable case continues in the small town of Amstetten, Austria. It first came to light April 19th, when a 19-year-old girl was found unconscious and gravely ill in the building where 73-year-old Josef Fritzl (top left) lived.

A plea for her mother to come forward forced the suspect to finally bring his own daughter out of hiding, telling family members she and her kids had decided to 'return home' after so many years.

But a phone tip urged authorities to question his daughter Elisabeth and when she agreed to talk to them away from her dad, the incredible story began to spill out.

The woman told incredulous investigators that her father had begun sexually molesting her at age 11. Then, in 1984, when she was 18, things got worse. She revealed her dad had sedated her, gotten her in handcuffs and then locked her in the cellar.

Even in her worst nightmares, she couldn't have contemplated it would be 24 long years before she'd be allowed out.

She alleges her father forced her to conceive seven children, and when one of them died in infancy, she claims he simply took the body and threw it into the furnace.

The woman and her growing brood of kids made their home in rooms under the apartment building owned by the stern authoritarian. While the other floors were rented out to relatives, the secret in the cellar - which authorities have termed a house of horrors - was kept a dark and impenetrable mystery.

The few rooms inside that dungeon didn't exceed 5˝ feet in height. The windowless 60 square metre padded cell could only be opened by an electronic keypad entry and only Fritzl had the combination. The makeshift prison boasted a bathroom with a shower, a few bedrooms, a TV and some small hotplates for cooking.

Authorities discovered the electrician had never let anyone go near the rooms and never revealed their existence, even to his wife, who incredibly didn't know what was going on beneath her feet all those years.

How did Fritzl explain his daughter's sudden disappearance to her and the neighbours? He forced Elisabeth to write a note saying she had joined a cult and that her family shouldn't look for her.

Three of the children lived with the family above ground, and their presence was explained away as being 'found' outside the home in 1993, 1994 and 1997. At least one had a note from the mother saying she could 'no longer care for the child.'

It appeared the grandparents had taken them in out of the kindness of their hearts. But police say there was no kindness in Fritzl, who could not deny what had been so long hidden.

"He admitted that he locked his daughter ... in the cellar, that he repeatedly had sex with her, and that he is the father of her seven children," reveals Franz Polzer, head of the Lower Austrian Bureau of Criminal Affairs.

DNA results have now proven those claims are correct.

And this story gets even more bizarre. Three of the other kids - a girl aged 19, and two boys - one 18 the other only 5 - had been locked underground since their birth and had never seen sunlight or been outside.

Obvious questions about why no one - including police, family and social workers in the city of 23,000 people - ever noticed anything suspicious are being raised but there are no clear answers.

"How is it possible that no one knew anything for 24 years?" wonders local teacher Anita Fabian. "This was not possible without accomplices."

"They appeared normal, just like any other family," adds bakery owner Guenter Pramreiter, who called the Fritzls frequent customers. "I'm totally shocked. This was next door. It's terrible."

The mayor of the small city suddenly thrust into the world spotlight recalls the suspect as well liked and remembers that he and his wife were both honoured by the town in 2006 on their 50th wedding anniversary. No one suspected a thing.

"I am appalled and saddened that such a thing could happen in my hometown," Mayor Herbert Katzengrueber shakes his head. "These have been awful and sad days."

The finally freed mother and her children are now under psychiatric care in an undisclosed location. "They are very pale," is all local official Hans-Heinz Lenze will reveal about them.

Meanwhile, the closest relatives of the children met with the offspring they never even knew existed on Tuesday. They came together at the clinic where the family is being treated.

"It was astonishing how easily it happened - how the mother and grandmother came together," clinic director Berthold Kepplinger reveals. He claims the kids related 'very naturally' to the strangers, despite the bizarre circumstances of their parentage. The three who lived with with Fritzl weren't aware they had any other brothers or a sister just a few metres down from them.

Fritzl appeared in court on Tuesday and remains locked up in a jail cell, facing rape charges, the most serious of the alleged offences under Austrian law. If convicted, he could face time in a jail cell of his own. But ironically, it could be less than the time he kept his daughter locked up.

The maximum penalty for his crime is 15 years in prison.

But prosecutors admit they're now looking into the possibility of charging Fritzl with "murder through failure to act" in connection with the infant death. That crime is punishable by up to 20 years in prison - still less than his daughter 'served' in her makeshift jail.

 Daughter held Captive 24 years
« Result #9 on Apr 27, 2008, 8:21pm »

Austrian police have arrested a 73-year-old man believed to have imprisoned his daughter in a windowless basement for 24 years. The woman told police she gave birth to seven children after being repeatedly raped by her father during her captivity.

The 42-year-old woman, identified as Elizabeth F., was missing since 1984, and was found by authorities in the town of Amstetten Saturday following a tip, Lower Austria police said in a statement.

The woman told police that she had been abused by her father since age 11, and was locked in her room in the cellar on Aug. 28, 1984.

Police said the woman's father, known as Josef, was in custody and told them how to enter the basement prison using a secret code.

"There is not only one, but a number of rooms: one room to sleep in, one to cook, and there are also sanitation facilities," Franz Polzer, head of the criminal investigations unit in the province of Lower Austria, told broadcaster ORF.

The U.K newspaper, The Guardian, is reporting that Josef's wife, Rosemarie, did not know where her daughter was and had assumed Elizabeth had voluntarily disappeared when her parents received a letter from her saying not to look for her.

As for the seven children Elizabeth gave birth to, police said one died after childbirth, and three were taken into Josef's house.

"Apparently, Josef arranged for the children to have the proper papers on them when they were left in the building, and forced the mother to write the accompanying letters," Polzer told a news conference.

"The father seems to be very authoritarian and decided what happened and what was supposed to happen in the family -- and today we know why he very closely guarded the basement."

The three other children were aged 19, 18 and the youngest was 5. They had been locked up with their mother since birth, never receiving sunlight or an education, police said.

Police have said that the woman appeared to be "greatly disturbed" during questioning. She agreed to talk only after she was assured she would no longer have any contact with her father and that her children would be taken care of.

The Guardian is reporting that the case only came to light after the oldest child, a girl, became seriously ill. She was dropped off at a hospital last weekend and hospital authorities appealed for her mother to come forward with details of her daughter's medical history.

Josef then brought Elizabeth and her two other children out of the dungeon, telling his wife that his daughter had chosen to return home, police said.

"This is not a mother abandoning her child which then had to be admitted to hospital in a serious condition ... We know that she herself has been kept imprisoned by her own father for 24 years in the basement and furthermore she obviously was also subjected to sexual abuse," Polzer said.

Sunday's news has reminded Austrians of another shocking case in 2006, where a young woman escaped an underground dungeon in a quiet Vienna suburb where she was held for more than eight years.

Natascha Kampusch was 10 years old when she was kidnapped in Vienna on her way to school in March 1998. Her abductor, Wolfgang Priklopil, threw himself in front of a train just hours after her dramatic escape.

TTC strike officially over as Ont. passes legislation

Toronto's public transit system will be back up and running as early as Sunday evening now that Ontario MPPs have ordered striking transit workers back on the job.

TTC strike officially over as Ont. passes legislation

The back-to-work legislation was approved unanimously after less than 30 minutes of debate. The bill was given royal assent and officially approved by 2:45 p.m.

TTC service, which came to a halt Friday at midnight, is expected to resume by Sunday evening. Full service will be in place in time for the Monday morning rush.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty told his colleagues that supporting the legislation is in the best interest of not only Toronto but the entire province.

"It goes without saying that Toronto, our capital city, plays an important role for all Ontarians," he said.

"By acting on behalf of Toronto workers, families and businesses, we are acting in the best interest of all Ontarians."

Liberal Labour Minister Brad Dugid said the government respects the collective bargaining process but that action needed to be taken to end the disruption to commuters.

"We encourage the TTC and its unions to continue bargaining and to reach mutually acceptable agreements," he told the legislature. "At the same time, we cannot stand by while the dispute shuts down the vital transportation system in Toronto, affecting millions of people and businesses."

Commuters owed an apology: MPPs

McGuinty also called on Toronto commuters to extend their usual courtesy with TTC workers and be mindful of the service they provide. However, other MPPs called on union officials to formally apologize to Torontonians for going on strike with only an hour's notice.

Conservative MPP Bob Runciman said people were put in danger when they were left downtown stranded without a way to get home. Fellow Tory MPP Peter Shurman said people are angry that they were not shown the respect they were promised.

Early on in the negotiations, union leaders said they would give the public at least 48 hours notice of a strike. But they reneged on their promise because of a fear that TTC workers would be abused by an irate public.

"People are angry and justifiably so," Shurman said during the session. "People want dependability, people want courtesy."

"If you want respect, you have to give respect," he continued. "On behalf of the people who use the TTC, I do believe the union owes Toronto an apology."

NDP Leader Howard Hampton said his party supports the legislation but not without reservation. He also said getting the TTC back up and running serves the public interest as 1.5 million riders depend on public transit to get to work, school and daily appointments.

Toronto Mayor David Miller said he will speak to the media about the latest development late Sunday afternoon.

Gary Webster, the general manager of the TTC, said Sunday morning if the province gives them the go-ahead, they will have the public transit system back up and running "as soon as possible."

Because the NDP and the Conservatives supported the legislation, the ruling will take effect immediately. If they had opposed the legislation then it would take about five days before TTC service could resume.

The order will:

* Call for the strike to end immediately after Royal Assent is given;
* Impose fines of $2,000 per day on individuals and $25,000 per day for the union or employer; and
* Refer outstanding issues to a mediator or arbitrator

Police monitor traffic

Late on Friday, members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 voted down a tentative settlement that its executive had recommended.

By midnight, the 8,900 Toronto Transit Commission employees were on strike, shutting down public transportation in Canada's largest city. On a typical day, the system is believed to move about 1.5 million people.

* TTC strike survival guide

The union had promised 48 hours notice before, but ended up giving only about 90 minutes notice on Friday.

Sgt. Brian Bowmen, with Toronto police traffic services, said there have not been major traffic problems because of the strike. He said police were keeping a close eye on the city's Entertainment District for drivers who had a few drinks before hitting the road.

"We are generally pleased with the way things have been going," he told CTV.ca Sunday afternoon. "We haven't had a real spike in incidents."

He said that police have been able to manage without having to put extra officers on duty.

"What we're seeing is that people who don't need to be downtown are not coming down because they anticipate it's problematic," he said.

"At the end of the day, what we're seeing from a police perspective and a traffic perspective things have gone as reasonable as we can expect."

Despite the strike call, the two sides did attempt a few hours of negotiations on Saturday before things broke down.

The reason for the strike is believed to be discontent among 3,000 maintenance workers, who feel that contracting out of some of their work will lead to job losses.

The TTC has said warranty work on new vehicles is being done by the manufacturer, but added that union members are even doing much of that.

Despite the inconvenience, the city essentially functioned on Saturday.

People without cars had to rely on friends or taxis for vehicle-based transit.

 Lasik Surgery--Read this
« Result #12 on Apr 27, 2008, 2:48pm »

WASHINGTON - In fury and despair, patients harmed by Lasik eye surgery told federal health advisers Friday of severe eye pain, blurred vision and even a son's suicide. The advisers recommended that the government warn more clearly about the risks of the hugely popular operations.

About 700,000 Americans a year undergo the elective laser surgery. Like golf star and famed Lasik recipient Tiger Woods, they're hoping to throw away their glasses, just as the ads say.

And while the vast majority benefit - most see 20-20 or even better - about one in four people who seeks Lasik is not a good candidate. A small fraction, perhaps one per cent or fewer, suffer serious, life-changing side effects: worse vision, severe dry eye, glare, inability to drive at night.

"Too many Americans have been harmed by this procedure and it's about time this message was heard," David Shell of Washington told the Food and Drug Administration's scientific advisers before their recommendation that the FDA provide clearer warnings.

Shell held up large photographs that he said depict his blurred world, showing halos around objects and double vision, since his 1998 Lasik.

"I see multiple moons," he said angrily. "Anybody want to have Lasik now?"

Colin Dorrian was in law school when dry eye made his contact lenses so intolerable that he sought Lasik, even though a doctor noted his pupils were pretty large. Both the dry eye and pupil size should have disqualified Dorrian, but he received Lasik anyway - and his father described six years of eye pain and fuzzy vision before the suburban Philadelphia man killed himself last year.

"As soon as my eyes went bad, I fell into a deeper depression than I'd ever experienced, and I couldn't get out," Gerard Dorrian read from his son's suicide note.

Matt Kotsovolos, who worked for the Duke Eye Center when he had a more sophisticated Lasik procedure in 2006, said doctors classify him as a success because he now has 20-20 vision. But he said, "For the last two years I have suffered debilitating and unremitting eye pain. ... Patients do not want to continue to exist as helpless victims with no voice."

The sober testimonies illustrated that a decade after Lasik hit the market, there still are questions about just how often patients suffer bad outcomes from the $2,000-per-eye procedure.

But one thing is clear, said Dr Jayne Weiss of Detroit's Kresge Eye Institute, who chairs the FDA advisory panel: "This is a referendum on the performance of Lasik by some surgeons who should be doing a better job."

The FDA advisers - a group of mostly glasses-wearing eye doctors - recommended that the agency make more clear the warnings it already provides for would-be Lasik patients:

-Add photographs that illustrate what people suffering certain side effects actually see, such as the glare that can make oncoming headlights a huge "starburst" of light.

-Clarify how often patients suffer different side effects, such as dry eye. Some eye surgeons say 31 per cent of Lasik patients have some degree of dry eye before surgery, and it worsens for about five per cent afterward. Other studies say 48 per cent of Lasik recipients suffer some degree of dry eye months later.

-Make more understandable the conditions that should disqualify someone from Lasik, such as large pupils or severe nearsightedness.

-And spell out that anyone whose nearsightedness is fixed by Lasik is guaranteed to need reading glasses in middle age, something that might not be needed if they skip Lasik.

That's a big reason why Weiss, the glasses-wearing ophthalmologist, won't get Lasik even though she offers it to her patients.

"I can read without my glasses and ... operate without my glasses, and I love that," she said. "The second aspect is I would not tolerate any risk for myself. ... Does that mean Lasik is good or not good? It means Lasik is good but not for everyone."

Lasik is marketed as quick and painless: Doctors cut a flap in the cornea - the eye's clear covering - aim a laser underneath it and zap to reshape the cornea for sharper sight.

The FDA agrees with eye surgeons' studies that only about five per cent of patients are dissatisfied with Lasik. What's not clear is exactly how many of those suffer lasting severe problems and how many just didn't get quite as clear vision as they had expected.

The most meticulous studies come from the military, where far less than one per cent of Lasik recipients suffer serious side effects, said Dr. David Tanzer, the navy's Medical Corps commander. That research prompted Lasik to be cleared last year both for navy aviators and NASA astronauts.

"The word from the guys that are out there standing in harm's way, whose lives depend on their ability to see, are asking you to please not take this away," said Lt.-Col. Scott Barnes, a cornea specialist at Fort Bragg who described army troops seeking Lasik after losing their glasses in combat.

No one's actually considering restrictions on Lasik - but the FDA is pairing with eye surgeons to begin a major study next year to better understand who has bad outcomes.

"Millions of patients have benefited" from Lasik, said Dr. Peter McDonnell of Johns Hopkins University, a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmologists. "No matter how uncommon, when complications occur, they can be distressing. ... We're dedicated to doing everything in our power to make the Lasik procedure even better for all our patients."

Old do u feel?

I am not feeling like I am almost 40 years old.. gasp...I cant believe I am even admitting it.. :o :o Some days I feel maybe in my 20's. And then I go on facebook and look at some of the profiles and feel 100 years old.. :-/

So am I the only one or is here anyone else out there who does not feel their age?

Well things have settled for abit now.. we are awaiting for the Letter of Administration for the estate to come thru so we can pay off everything..Right now we are hoping that they do this without asking for a Bond. a percentage of her estate up front..

But we still have not done anything for ourselves for a will..

DO u guys use a lawyer or who?
