I have worked as an EA for 5 1/2 years. I love my job, and get alot of joy from teaching and guiding children with special needs. Here is my RANT! After a couple of workshops and a few experiences in my current position I am feeling belittled and unappreciated! I realize that I am not a teacher, however I spend more time with these children than anyone else (except maybe family), and although the teacher changes every year, I remain a constant. It would be really nice if my opinions and observations were viewed as valid, instead of the rantings of "just an EA". I noticed that many of you on here have children with special needs, and I would love to hear about your positive experiences with EA's.
Thank you all for listening (or reading as the case may be)

I can see how u feel frustrated and unheard.. I think it would not be common but afraid it is..From what I understand.. the EA usually stays with the child and works one on one with that child for a school year and is quite involved with the programming for the child..
Also would the EA not be the one journalling and communicating more with the parents since u are the one shadowing that child?
Have u tried to speak to the staff at the school about your suggestions and let them know u have invested interest in this child..and only want the best?
Difficult situation. Hope luvmykid sees this since she is an EA..

That's why I quit.......I'm not an EA anymore. I'm sorry to hear you are going through that. It is a terrible feeling and no one should have to feel that way. I agree with everything you said carcait. I worked in a higschool, and many of the kids had very little respect because they know we aren't teachers.

i must say that i love my sons ea..not sure if thats waht she truley is but we love her anyway.. my youngest son is in a nuresry school and has autism (as some of you know) without her he might not have been able to continue there..he is 3 going on 4 in feb..she has helped him in so many ways..we are so gratful to have her helping him out. she does everything with him one on one..which he will need one he starts school..and i dont think she can go with him..and thats saddens me and i hope once he does start school he can find someone just like her..he knows how to push the buttons of every teacher there and knows how they are react..he knows wither her he cant get away with anything, and has become really attached to her...i hope she knows all that she has done for us and him..i tell her as much as i can but i hope she knows we mean it...
