Toronto - A 29-year-old man has been charged with second-degree muder for allegedly killing his pregnant, common-law wife and stabbing his mother in the city's northwest end.
Turan Cocelli, an unemployed carpenter on workers' compensation, was also charged with aggravated assault.
Police arrested the man after responding to a call to a home in the Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue area, at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Investigators found the 25-year-old pregnant woman and another 44-year-old woman suffering from stab wounds.
Det.-Sgt. Gary Grinton said doctors did everything they could to try to save the woman, who was seven-months pregnant, and her unborn baby.
"She was transported to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries after surgery. An emergency C-section was done; however, the child was stillborn," he said.
The dead woman was not immediately identified.
Grinton also said the accused will not face charges in the death of the baby. "The law in Canada doesn't allow for kiling of an unborn fetus," he said.
The 44-year-old woman remains in hospital with non-life threatening wounds.
